Open letter to Elon Musk — purpose of this cemetery
Dear Mr. Elon Musk,
We, the undersigned developers, have come together as a united community to express our deep concerns regarding the recent announcement of the forthcoming changes to the Twitter API pricing structure.
As individuals who have dedicated our time, resources, and passion to creating applications that have contributed to the growth and success of the Twitter platform, we feel that these changes will have a detrimental impact on our work and the broader ecosystem of third-party applications.
The new pricing structure, set to take effect by the end of April, will force many developers to either significantly limit the functionality of their applications or shut down altogether due to the exorbitant costs. This will not only affect our livelihoods but also the millions of users who rely on our applications to enhance their Twitter experience.
We understand that as a business, Twitter must make decisions that are in the best interest of the company and its shareholders. However, we believe that the proposed changes to the API pricing structure will stifle innovation and lead to a decline in the diversity and quality of applications available on the platform.
In light of these concerns, we kindly request that you reconsider the implementation of such drastic changes to the Twitter API pricing structure. Instead, we propose that Twitter engage in a collaborative dialogue with the developer community to explore alternative pricing models that better balance the needs of both Twitter and its developers.
An alternative pricing model that could better suit the needs of the developer community while still providing revenue for Twitter could be a pricing a pay-what-you-use model, with lower-cost tiers for smaller applications and higher-cost tiers for those with larger user bases and higher usage demands. This approach ensures that smaller developers can still afford to use the API, while larger applications contribute more towards the costs of maintaining the API infrastructure.
We believe that working together to explore these or other alternative pricing models will not only benefit the developer community but also help Twitter maintain its position as a leading platform for social media innovation. By fostering a vibrant ecosystem of third-party applications, Twitter can continue to offer its users a diverse range of tools and experiences that drive engagement and loyalty to the platform.
We appreciate your attention to this matter and hope to engage in a constructive dialogue with you and your team to find a solution that works for all parties involved. Thank you for considering our concerns and suggestions.
